The touring Play Fair Brazil side defeated Fiji 2-1 in the first of their two friendly matches tonight at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

The side laced with the likes of Paulo Sergio, Giovanni, Emerson da Silva, Carlos da Silva and Jose Almeida found the going tough against their youthful and more energetic opponents who played with a lot of passion and determination.

Claudecir Aguiar netted the opener for the visitors late in the first spell and Fiji replied two minutes later through Valerio Nawatu as the sides headed to the break with a 1-1 scoreline.

Fiji started the second spell attacking but a defensive blunder allowed Giovanni to score the second and winning goal midway in the half.

Fiji coach Juan Carlos Buzzetti was gracious in defeat and praised his players for their fighting spirits.

"I had to be on my feet throughout the match and had to keep shouting to the players to keep them concentrated on the game. We were playing a professional outfit and it was important that we give our best."

"I am happy with my young team's performance and with time we will improve."

"The substitutes that went in the second half played extremely well and come Saturday, fans should expect a better performance from us."

Brazilian coach Marcos Vizzolli said the physical approach by the Fijians made it hard for them to play their style of game.

"It was a tough game for us as this was our first match here and it took time for our players to adjust to the conditions."

"Now that we have played Fiji, our approach in the next match will be different and we surely want to return home with maximum points."

The second and final match will be played this Saturday at Ba's Govind Park. The match will commence at 2.30pm.
